We test the Nikon D200 digital camera for image noise in daytime shots
We test the Nikon D200 for noise during daytime.

The RAW files for these images are available on the special digital camera section of the site for download so that you can examine the images yourself.

These exposures were made in Program mode with a starting exposure (100ISO) of 1/20 second and f4.5. They were shot with the Nikon 18-70mm, f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor lens, at a focal length of 70mm.

You can see noise is very well controlled to this point.

Noise is also very low at 400ISO, Noise reduction seems to make no difference.

800ISO NR off

Noise is now noticable (at least if one zooms in). NR does improve the image, removing the noise banding visible in flat tone areas, but with a very slight drop in sharpness.

At 1600ISO noise is very noticable, and, strangely, I believe you get a better image with NR off, which contrasts with the situation at 800ISO.

At 3200ISO noise is very strong and NR does make a very slight improvement.
