A great book on clse-up and macrophotography
Close Up
Creative Techniques for Successful Macrophotography
By John Brackenbury
RotoVision, 2004
ISBN: 2 88046 782 9
This book aims to inspire and educate through stunning macrophotography. The author is a zoologist and a lecturer in veterinary medicine, as well as being a dedicated photographer, so he brings both a scientific and visual appreciation to his subjects.
The 160-page book is divided into topical chapters:
* Close-focusing and depth of field
* Exposure and lighting
* Shooting action in close-up
* Panoramic close-up photography
* Combining techniques
* Inspiration and motivation
* In close-up: being a macrophotographer
On first glance the book appears to be entirely a picture book. However looks are deceiving. The pictures are accompanied with substantial text captions, and these are actually larger than you suspect because a much smaller typeface is used for the captions than is normal.
So this is not a book heavily loaded with technique how-to’s. But it is loaded with technique if you observe the images closely and then read the captions. The images are stunning. There is a great cross-section of subject matter and none of it is so extreme that someone new to macro will feel overwhelmed, a danger with some books.
This is a great book. Good, solid information and great images. This is a perfect book for someone interested in macro, with or without a companion book that emphasizes technique.
