May 2007 Outstanding Art/Photo Site Award – Barbara Leven Photography

Barbara Leven’s photography of the urban and natural landscape through tight, detail shots is striking.
Barbara Leven's photography website

Barbara is a New York photographer who seems to like to isolate a detail from a larger scene. A fine art photographer, she has a long exhibition history of both analog and digital photography.

Her web site shows photography in four galleries: urban relics, slow glass, flora and living water. Urban relics comprises tight, isolated details found around the streets of New York. Slow glass is a series of lovely, abstract images of glass and reflections in the glass. Flora comprises striking plant and floral photography. Living water is very strong photography of pond and lake water, of koi fish and leaves, and the beautiful surface tension effects. All are close-ups of details isolated from their environment. All the work is crisp, saturated and striking. There is a unifying sense of peace through all four galleries.

The web site is a simple, flash site. A tasteful slideshow runs on the home page. A straightforward navigation bar runs across the bottom of the site, giving access to all parts of the site from every page. The galleries display only one image at a time, with navigation buttons to move from image to the next image. You can also access a thumbnail view and purchase information from each image page. Other pages in the site are an artist’s statement, resume, contact details, information on print purchases, a feedback page and news of upcoming and current exhibitions.

The whole site works extremely well,  the site technology, the aesthetics of it and the strong photography. It is tasteful and subdued and allows the viewer to concentrate on the photography, which is the whole idea. A great site and stunning photography.
