The results are up for the manipulated photography and digital art competition
Corel Manipulated Photography and Digital Art Competition
The January winner of the Corel PSP XI software is Peter Ciccariello with his image ‘Bird in a basket’.
“Bird in a basket” is a digital collage containing multiple layers of photographs. This image is a primal montage of fear and anxiety. The bird psyche has become invisible, camouflaged, taking on the patterns and soma of its predators.
This is an interesting image and a great demonstration of the merger of many images together.
Also of Peter’s are:
” Language as authority” is a digital collage containing a number of photographs and fragments of text all merged with an underlying structure of geometric forms texture mapped with additional photographs and rendered in Bryce. Postwork is done in Photoshop and Painter. This image questions the authority that our language implies. Are words inside or outside of the body? At what point does fragmentation destroy meaning? What is the landscape of language?

Sea Horses
I started with Sinedot filter to give multiple curves. I made them symmetrical using a mirroring filter. I added Flaming Pearl’s Aetherize and flood and used the symmetrical tool. I added a stock sea horse image, duplicated and many layers to give final finish.
Hubble Space Telescope
i used a NASA photo of Mars, used Sinedots on the image, doubled the layer, expanded the image and combined using hard light , again Sinedots, Flaming Pearl’s Flood and Glitterato.
Estelle Soh of England:
This is a digital photomanipulation, using my own digital photographs.
How I made it:
The base photo is of a spider in a pyrex dish, against a kitchen strip light. I cropped, level-adjusted and colourised it, then used a brush to blend it into the dark background. I then copied the layer and ran it through a fractal trace filter to get the effect in the lower left corner, and erased the excess fractalised layer. Finally, I added a faint watermark of another spider photo (incidentally, of the same spider as before), using the divide function of a layer. Everything was done in the GIMP.
Larry Hill of Nevada
The trail through Haleakala Crater on Maui crosses the lip of one of several dormant volcanoes. This is a composite of three photographs taken with the Nikon D2x. After assembly, considerable Photoshop work brought out the colors of sulphur and iron, lights and darks, individual color saturation, and sharpness. One component was resized to fit, and the whole was skewed to remove assembly artifacts.
Marcia Fasy of Oregon
This photo was taken of a cow being electrically milked. He suddenly raised his head and looked at me only inches away. I don’t know who was more surprised!
He was painted in Painter IX after being edited in Photoshop CS2. using highlights/shadows, levels, and sharpening
Laurie Thompson of New Orleans
Feeling Strained –
made in Photoshop from photos including dried mud, my kitchen strainer and a casserole dish. The strained effect was created in Photoshop.
Tim O’Neill
This image was shot in the studio with a 6×8 foot larson soffbox as the mainlight, a large larson reflector as the primary fill and a Larson strip light as a kicker. Captured on a Nikon D200 at f8. I did basic retouching in PS2 then flattened the image and opened it in painter. I wanted a low key renaissance look so so kept my added colors more muted and vignetting the edges as I painted. The final steps included several texture layers in different modes, a curves bump for contrast, increased saturation, and dodging and burning.
