We put the Canon 350D / Rebel XT through its paces for image noise and resolution as part of a comparison with the Nikon D200.
In this test we shot with a tripod mounted 350D / Rebel XT with two lenses, the Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 XR Macro shooting at 100mm and the Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro.
Note that TIFF files of the center sections of all the RAW images that were used to prepare the JPEGs shown here are available for download off the camera test special part of DIMi. You can access those files here.
First the noise tests. These are 200% zoom ins on the center section of each image.

1600ISO
Now for the resolution test, which is a very informal one. I shot the same scene with both lenses and below are the center sections.
Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 XR Macro shot at 100mm
Canon 100mm f2.8 Marco
In the TIFF versions of these there is a noticable difference with the Canon Macro giving more detail. However, given the long zoom range, the Tamron gives a great result and I’ll be covering this lens in more detail in a followup article.
